Introduction to breathing

SUGGESTED STEPS & TEACHING POINTS

Revise basic strokeSee skill no. 9

Step 1 – Choose breathing side

  • Breathe and blow on both sides
  • Choose preferred side

Step 2 – Identify ‘breathing’ and ‘blowing’ arm

  • Breathing arms is on breathing side
  • Blowing arm is on other side

Step 3 – Breathing and blowing – leaning forward (touching edge)

  • Face the edge – one step back
  • Breathing position =
  1. Blowing arm forward (extended to edge)
  2. Breathing arm extended back
  3. Ear in water (by blowing arm)
  4. Breathe (small breath)
  5. Face in and blow
  6. Repeat

Step 4 – Breathing and blowing – kicking (short distance with board)

  • ‘Breathing position’
  • Board in blowing hand (fingers over, thumb under)
  • Push off and kick
  • Breathing arm on thigh
  • Breathe, blow breathe, blow etc.

Step 5 – Breathing and blowing – with arm action

  • Option: one arm drill with breathing

Step 6 – Leaning forward – catch up to edge (or board)

  • Breathing position’
  • Breathe and recover breathing arm
  • Face in
  • Blow and recover blowing arm

Step 7 – Swimming – catch up to board

  • ‘Breathing position’
  • Push off and kick
  • Breathe and recover arm
  • Face in
  • Blow and recover arm

Step 8 – Swimming – without board

  • ‘Breathing position’
  • Push off and kick
  • Breathe and recover arm
  • Face in
  • Blow and recover arm

MUST SEE:

  • Near horizontal position
  • Effective kick
  • Regular breathing pattern
